In World of Warcraft Classic: Season of Discovery, every class is given a variety of new Runes that change up the meta and even introduce brand-new specs. Alongside Rogues and Shaman, Warlocks now have the ability to Tank in SoD, and it’s almost entirely tanks to one Rune: Metamorphosis.
WoW Classic: Season of Discovery Level Cap
Every Season of Discovery Phase will increase the max level Cap in SoD – starting at a relatively low 25, and eventually reaching lvl 60.
The method to unlock Metamorphosis is about as complex as the effects of the Rune, though, so players keen to Tank as a Warlock should get started as soon as possible. This guide covers the effects of Metamorphosis and other information about the Rune, as well as details on how to unlock Metamorphosis by finishing its multi-part quest chain.

Metamorphosis offers the biggest overhaul of traditional Warlock gameplay by turning the caster into a melee Tank. This Rune multiplies the Warlock’s Armor value by 5, reduces their chance to be crit, increases their overall Threat generation by 50%, and doubles the mana regeneration of Life Tap.
If that wasn’t enough to overhaul the class, the Metamorphosis Rune effects also changes three of the class’ abilities, and adds two new ones. Though Runes in the Chest and Legs slot can make a Warlock Tank more effective, this is the one that enables the spec to work as well as it does in SoD.
For such a powerful, class-altering Rune, Warlocks have to go through one of the season’s most flavorful – and perhaps a bit tedious – new quests. There are four quests in the Metamorphosis quest chain, which begins with The Orb of Soran’ruk.
The Orb of Soran’ruk
This quest is offered to Warlocks by Doan Karhan, a neutral NPC just to the east of Camp Taurajo in the Barrens. Karhan asks players to collect three Soran’ruk Fragments and one Large Soran’ruk Fragment. The small ones drop from Twilight Acolytes both inside and just outside of Blackfathom Deeps, while the Large fragment drops from Shadowfang Darksoul enemies within Shadowfang Keep. Collect both, then head back to Karhan.
WoW Classic: Season of Discovery Server List
Both the North American and European regions are gaining plenty of WoW Season of Discovery servers – and so is Australia and the OCE region.
Rumors Abound
Karhan will ask players to then collect the Orb of Des and the Bough of Altek, two new unique quest items. The Orb of Des can be found in the Redridge Mountains, in the eastern Tower of Ilgalar. The Bough of Altek, on the other hand, is found at the top of the Tower of Althalaxx in Darkshore. Once you have collected both of these items, head back to Karhan for the third part of the quest.
The Conjuring
The last part of the quest requires players to collect ten Blood of the Legion, which can only be acquired from demonic enemies in the southeastern area of Ashenvale. WoW lore aficionados will recognize this area as the spot where Grommash Hellscream slew Mannoroth, and there is even a monument to his sacrifice. Kill Mannooc Lashers, Felguards, Legion Hounds, and Searing Infernals to collect the Blood of the Legion, then look for an Obelisk dedicated to Grommash.
Interact with the monument to begin the final battle of the Metamorphosis quest chain, in which waves of demon enemies spawn. The Warlock must kill these enemies using the Drain Soul ability, while standing in a Purple Rune that appears on the ground near the obelisk. Survive the waves, and a Mysterious Traveler will appear.
Raszel Ander
Talk to the Mysterious Traveler to finish The Conjuring and begin the final (and very brief) step of the Metamorphosis quest. The Mysterious Traveler gives the quest Raszel Ander when he appears. After picking it up, head back to Karhan one last time to finish the quest and receive the Metamorphosis Rune. Right-click the Rune in your inventory, then look for it in the Gloves tab of the Rune Engravings menu.
